Navigating the End of Naps

One of the biggest sleep transitions in toddlerhood is dropping the final nap, and it can feel like a big leap for both little ones and parents!

So how do you know when your toddler is ready to drop their nap completely?

Here are some common signs:

  • They're 3–4 years old (sometimes a bit younger or older, every child is different!)

  • Nap time becomes a daily struggle, and they stay awake for the full duration.

  • If they do nap, bedtime gets pushed later or becomes more difficult.

  • They’re handling full days without a nap and not melting down by late afternoon or dinner.

  • Nighttime sleep is being impacted; waking earlier or waking through the night.

If most of these sound familiar, your little one may be approaching the end of their napping days.

What to do when naps are fading:

  • Shift to “quiet time” in the afternoon to give their body and mind a break.

  • Move bedtime earlier to help prevent over-tiredness.

  • Keep consistent routines to support a smooth transition.

  • Be patient! Some days they may still need a nap!

This transition can take a few weeks or even months. It’s normal to go back and forth for a while. Some days they may need a nap; other days, they won’t!

You’re doing great, and so is your toddler!

If nap transitions are creating stress in your home, I’m here to help. Let's create a plan that brings more peace (and rest!) to your days.
