Crib Transition: Is It Time to Ditch the Crib?

The crib-to-bed transition is one of the biggest shifts in toddler sleep. It can feel exciting but also nerve-wracking.

Here’s how to know your toddler might be ready:
✔️ They’re climbing out of the crib
✔️ They’re 3+ years old
✔️ They’re asking for or showing interest in a bed

But here’s something most people don’t tell you…

Transitioning too early can backfire leading to sleep disruptions, bedtime battles, and middle-of-the-night visits to your pillow.

The crib is a secure, familiar space. If your toddler sleeps well in it and isn’t climbing out, there’s no rush. Keeping your child in a crib longer is often better for sleep if they’re still doing well.

I don’t transition my kids to a big kid bed till they are 4 and trust me, it has saved us so many sleepless nights!!

1. Pick the right time. Avoid transitions during big life changes (new sibling, potty training, travel, etc.).
2. Let your child be part of the process. Talk about it, read books about beds, and let them help choose bedding.
3. Set up the room for safety. Secure furniture, install a gate if needed, and make sure the room is toddler-proofed.
4. Keep bedtime routines the same. Familiar routines = a sense of security.

5. Be consistent. If they get out of bed, gently return them without engaging too much.

You might see some testing at first—that’s normal. Stay calm and consistent, and it will get better with time.

If your toddler’s new bed has led to…

  • Constant bedtime battles

  • Little feet padding to your room at 2 a.m

  • Or a complete sleep regression

Even with the best preparation, toddlers often test the limits of their new freedom.

Here’s what can help:

✔️ Use a toddler clock to set clear boundaries
✔️ Offer lots of praise for staying in bed (sticker charts can work great for this age!)
✔️ Return them calmly and quietly to their room each time
✔️ Stay consistent (even when it’s hard)

Still struggling?
